At 10 o’clock on a Saturday night, the Mariana Grajales park in
downtown Havana pulses with a thumping beat. Young men in drooping
trousers and women in miniskirts dance, raise their hands in the air and
grind pelvis to pelvis amid whooping, clapping and coarse jokes.
The
risque dance style known as “perreo,” which translates loosely as
“dogging,” is associated with reggaeton, an up-tempo mix of reggae,
hip-hop and Latin rhythms that was popularized in Puerto Rico and has
become a mainstay on Cuban TV and radio.
Now, the music finds
itself squarely in the sights of critics who lament the genre’s
notoriously suggestive lyrics, steamy videos and sometimes misogynistic
stereotyping.
Cuban authorities recently announced restrictions
reportedly declaring state-run recording studios and broadcasts
off-limits to songs with questionable lyrics. They also prohibit such
music in performance spaces subject to government control.
The
rules would theoretically apply to all genres, but it’s reggaeton that
leading cultural lights have singled out for criticism in official media
while warning of new rules governing “public uses of music.”
Legislators
are also studying a bill to regulate the airwaves and performance
spaces. Artists would face potential sanctions for lyrics and
performances deemed too racy, although it’s not yet clear who would be
the official arbiters of taste or what penalties may be imposed.
“It
has been decided,” said Danilo Sirio Lopez, director of the Cuban
Institute of Radio and Television, in a December speech to lawmakers.
“We will not play one more rude song, one more base song, one more song
with offensive lyrics or videos that attack or denigrate the image of
women.”
The proposal apparently falls short of an outright ban,
but in a country where the government is the main patron of the arts and
controls all airwaves, the threat of losing access to broadcasts,
production facilities and performance spaces sends a clear message to
reggaetoneros: Clean up your act, or else.
The past year’s hit
song, “Quimba Pa’ Que Suene,” by Los Principales, translates gently as
“Shake It So It Goes Off” and is a kind of homage to masturbation. The
video was uploaded to YouTube and heralded as “the new hymn of Cuban
youth,” and for the last year it could be heard booming at top volume at
private parties, school events and other get-togethers.
The
runaway smash “El Chupi Chupi,” by Osmani Garcia and various artists,
was also criticized for its creative wordplay about sexual acts. “Go on
make yourself pretty, and turn out the lights, the orgy has begun,” goes
one of the few lines printable in a family newspaper.
Officials, critics and the influential Cuban Women’s Federation complain both songs are vulgar and demeaning to women.
“Obviously
everyone is free to listen in private to whatever music they want,”
said Orlando Vistel, president of the Cuban Music Institute, an arm of
the Culture Ministry that promotes music. “But that freedom does not
include the right to reproduce it and play it in state or private
restaurants or cafeterias, public buses or public spaces in general.”
Cuba’s
unique political and economic model may have cut many off from the
Internet and other global phenomena, but they haven’t insulated the
island from all of the region’s trends, said Roberto Zurbano, a promoter
at the government-run cultural institute Casa de las Americas.
Reggaeton’s popularity on the island is a product of those influences,
he said.
“Reggaeton is a music that very much reflects the era,
an era of marginalization,” Zurbano said. “In general reggaeton is about
the poor people of the Caribbean, with its poverty, violence,

Experts
also credit reggaeton’s popularity to its simple but catchy beat. And
they say it’s here to stay, as evidenced by artists from other genres
such as salsa incorporating the sound into their music.
“Very
easy to dance to. ... It should be no surprise that it has caught on so
easily among young people,” said Raul Fernandez, a professor at the
School of Social Sciences of the University of California, Irvine, who
has written about Cuban music.
“The lyrics to dance music are often not exemplary in a literary sense,High quality stone mosaic tiles.” he added, but “people aren’t going to dance in order to be educated by the lyrics.”
Indeed, some fans barely notice the slangy, rapid-fire lyrics, or say it’s not the main attraction.
“I
really like reggaeton. It has a beat that fires me up,” said Yanet
Perez, a 28-year-old Havana resident. “It’s fun to dance to because of
the way it gets you moving, although the lyrics sometimes can be bad or
slimy.”
Records with explicit lyrics in the United States have
carried parental warning labels since the 1980s, and last year the
Rihanna video “S&M” was banned in at least 11 countries. In 2009,
Jamaica prohibited songs and videos with explicit references to sex and
violence from being broadcast on radio or TV.
The backlash against reggaeton has historical echoes in Cuba,China plastic moulds

and salsa once scandalized older generations by pushing contemporary
boundaries of sensuality. Today, they are firmly established in the
musical mainstream.
In the 1960s the Beatles were banned from
Cuban radio, and some fans were forced to cut their long hair,
reprimanded at work or passed over for jobs. Now, a Havana plaza boasts a
statue of John Lennon and the nearby Beatles-themed bar The Yellow
Submarine is a thriving nightspot.
Ironically, some of those who
would clamp a lid on reggaeton’s excesses once rebelled against their
own elders by listening clandestinely to John, Paul, George and Ringo.
“Reggaeton
is very popular among young people,” said 22-year-old singer Carlitos
“Papi” Chacon, who avoids explicit lyrics in his own music but
acknowledged that many of his peers “say crazy stuff.”
As an

Joan Zielinski remembered for her passion for life
In the wake of the death of sociology Prof. Joan Zielinski, her
students and colleagues remember her as someone with a personality – and
homemade baked goods – that left them wanting to come back to her
classroom.
“Joan put her passion for life into everything she did, and each piece of her cake just made us want one more,” wrote economics Prof. Mark Witte in a Dec. 16 email to the Harvey Kapnick Business Institutions Program email list. Witte worked with Zielinski on BIP for the past seven years.
Zielinski passed away unexpectedly Dec. 13. She served as executive director of the New Jersey Lottery and as a marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School before coming to Northwestern.Find detailed product information for howo spare parts and other products.
Weinberg Dean Sarah Mangelsdorf sent a notice regarding Zielinski’s death to faculty members on Dec. 14. An official email has not been sent to the entire NU community.
BIP assistant director Lucy Millman said Zielinski was instrumental in developing a three-course series of Marketing Management, Consumer Behavior and Marketing Ideology for students in the program. Zielinski also taught Sociology of Complex Organizations and marketing classes in Kellogg before joining BIP.
Zielinski was regarded highly by many of her students. She was nominated for Associated Student Government’s Faculty Honor Roll multiple times and was chosen by seniors to give the annual “Last Lecture” at the Cubby Bear in Chicago during Senior Week in 2009, Millman said. Zielinski also coached students in the L’Oreal Brandstorm competition, for which teams devise a product and marketing strategy to pitch to consumers in particular scenarios. She led her teams to national finals in New York the past two years, Millman said.
“She made learning really fun.We mainly supply professional craftspeople with wholesale turquoise beads from china, That’s what you get on all the CTECs, that (her students) learned stuff and they really enjoyed it,” she said. “It didn’t matter what the subject … whatever she taught, she made it really fun.”
Communication senior Corey Moss, who took Zielinski’s Sociology of Complex Organizations course last winter, recalled various “maternal aspects” of her personality. He said she would bring cookies into class and held a nametag-making contest during the first week of the quarter.
“She created such a homey atmosphere,” Moss said. “She was the type of person who closely resembled the teachers I had in high school. She doesn’t fit the mold of your stereotypical college lecturer. She’s someone who really transcended that stereotype and made herself available to her students.”
Kolin Pound (Weinberg ‘10), a BIP graduate and Zielinski’s former student, served as a teaching assistant for her 300-level classes during his senior year and said he took “all the classes she offered.” He said Zielinski lived her life to the fullest.
“I think first and foremost, she loved her daughters, she loved her students and she loved life,” Pound said. “I think she was somebody that I personally looked up to and all her students looked up to, a brilliant compassionate woman that made the most out of every moment.”
Zielinski’s husband, Dr. Peter Alsberg, explained how she resonated with students, saying that she sought to make her classes “a real experience” and that she thrived most when speaking in front of others.Find detailed product information for howo spare parts and other products.

Wayne was thought to be the next world champion and at one time was in line to get the belt before Colt Cabana and Adam Pearce left the title in the middle of the ring in Australia leaving the title vacant as they finished their "Seven Levels of Hate" series that saw Cabana win the tie-breaker but refuse the belt in what the NWA called an "unsanctioned" match.
Chance Prophet, a former National Champion, lost that title to Kahagas in a brutal match in Florida in spring of 2012 and since then he has been lobbying to get the NWA World Championship. Sources close to the NWA say Prophet, while a great performer in the ring, because of his character, does not fit the mold for what the NWA wants in a champion.
Erikson has been a source of controversy after legal troubles and alleged mismanagement in his role as booker for NWA Mountain State. Ronquillo continues to be a bane for the NWA due to his perceived heavy-handed and near bullying tactics when dealing with constituents and supporters. Two long-time supporters Phil Varlese and (former NWA President) Howard Brody have recently pulled their promotions out of the NWA organization and have spoken out against the new NWA regime.

Waiting Game
Let’s see, where were we? It seems like eons ago that we last checked
in with the L&G crew, what with their office raids and financial
precariousness and semi-revolting bathroom sex. Maddeningly (and
typically for this show this season, unfortunately), many of the
questions we were teased with last time went nowhere this week, namely:
Is Nick dead, or did he go to that purgatory in the writer’s room where the Kings send characters just long enough so we’ve almost forgotten about them before they’re suddenly sprung on us again twenty episodes later? See: Scott-Carr, Wendy. “No one disappears. They all come back like zombies,” says a none-too-pleased Eli when he and Diane see that it’s Peter’s placid former opponent (Anika Noni-Rose) who’ll be handling his DoJ inquiry. Noni-Rose is excellent at playing the shark here,Quickparts builds injection molds using aluminum or steel to meet your program. and Eli’s understandably freaked.
A few of you in the comments are getting impatient with these meandering mini-plots. Is any of this going anywhere? It seems like the show has been priming us for some sort of dramatic reboot for months now, and I agree that it’s getting harder to hold out hope that it’s coming at all. Will Maddie ever claim her supervillain mantle? Is Alicia going to do something definitive about her relationship with Peter? At the midpoint last season we were just dealing with the end of Willicia. Where’s this season’s real arc (beyond the bankruptcy stuff, which, how many more times do we need to watch Diane tell Will that the settlement on the table will really really help them?)
Could the shake-up come from Canning as the firm’s new creditor? This is certainly an odd twist, but it barely seems meaty enough to create major change unless Canning and Hayden join forces in some unstoppable way. Or could it come from Jordan Karahalios (T.R. Knight) going head to head with Eli? We know since he’s wearing a hoodie, in the universe of this show, that he must be a tech mogul or a wunderkind (or maybe both), so perhaps there are some surprises from his corner. We sat through an excruciating run of psychosexual Nick and way too little Cary so far, there has to be some sort of payoff, right? Right? We’ll try to hold out hope a bit longer.
On to the few things that went right this episode. The case of the week was an interesting, timely one about foreclosed houses and West Nile virus, and got in a few digs at holier-than-thou bankers. The family of 15-year-old Kayley Spence is suing Atlantic Commerce bank, the group who foreclosed on a handful of properties in their area and allowed the swimming pools to go stagnant and attract West Nile mosquitoes, one of which bit and infected poor Kayley, who was a former ballerina and is now confined to a wheelchair.
Will and Cary are running the deposition back in Chicago, opposite a prickly Martha Reed (Grace Rex), of “Marthas and Caitlins,” whose testy questioning suggests she’s probably fitting in just fine at Canning’s firm. Alicia’s out of town to depose the bank president Wilkes Ingersoll (James Rebhorn) near his ranch in Minnesota,We mainly supply professional craftspeople with crys talbeads wholesale shamballa Bracele , and all of the babbling brooks and woods so lovely, dark, and deep get Alicia nostalgic for the quiet she had as a pinot-swilling housewife. Seems Ingersoll is so busy and important that some urgent something or other keeps getting in the way of his appearing for the deposition. He says he’ll be back later, and Alicia’s not so sure, but Diane and Will tell her to wait it out.
Remote location, all of that empty time, no cell service — seems like the perfect setting for some sort of meaningful, fish-out-of-water set piece, and it just about looks like it’s going to happen when Kalinda arrives at night to bring Alicia clothes and booze. Alicia’s happy to see her, and this relationship does feel like the one that’s actually going somewhere from week to week, so there’s that, but I wish things had turned out a little weightier or at least more fun than they did, à la the last time we saw Alicia after-hours on a business trip.
Here it’s all forlorn, wistful admissions that stop a beat too soon. “You know what I miss about my old life?” says Alicia, staring straight ahead. “At home in the afternoons I would drink every day at three o’ clock, a glass of red wine. Waiting for the kids to come home. I miss the silence in the house at three.” Wait, what? Didn’t she ever have to carpool?
“I miss this,” says Kalinda, meaning Alicia, them, their bond. “I’m sorry.” For sleeping with her husband? Allowing her crazy ex to threaten Alicia? For being part of what broke Alicia out of that gauzy pinot bubble? Things get wrapped up shortly after with the case when Kalinda figures out Canning and Ingersoll’s big secret: Ingersoll has cancer. He needs to reveal it to his shareholders, and that would likely botch the proposed merger that’s on the table with another bank, so L&G strong-arms him into a hefty settlement, promising to keep things off the record. “This is beneath you, Alicia,” tries Canning. “No, unfortunately, it’s not,” she replies. The Alicia/Canning dynamic has always been an intriguing one, what with their competitiveness and then the job offer and now his slithery guile that helps Alicia up her game. Here’s hoping there’s more where that came from.
After weeks of negotiations, a $10 billion settlement over claims of foreclosure abuses by 14 banks is expected to be announced as early as Monday. The deal “covers abuses like flawed paperwork and botched loan modifications,” Jessica Silver-Greenberg reports in The New York Times, citing several people with knowledge of the discussions.
All 14 banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup, were expected to sign on to the deal. “An estimated $3.75 billion of the $10 billion is to be distributed in cash relief to Americans who went through foreclosure in 2009 and 2010, these people said,” according to The Times. “An additional $6 billion is to be directed toward homeowners in danger of losing their homes after falling behind on their monthly payments.” The talks almost fell apart over the weekend when some Federal Reserve officials insisted that banks pay an additional $300 million for their role in the 2008 financial crisis, but the officials ultimately backed down, according to The Times.
At first blush, the settlement looks like “another gift to the banks,” The New York Times columnist Gretchen Morgenson writes. “One could easily argue that this reported settlement was pushed by the banks so they could limit the damage they would have incurred if an aggressive review had continued.”
Some housing advocates said the deal would not provide enough relief. “It is still unclear how the monetary relief will be distributed among homeowners, but one immediate result of the settlement is the end of a troubled review of millions of loan files,” according to The Times. That program, which mandated that banks hire independent consultants to audit loan files, suffered from mounting costs. Only 323,000 homeowners submitted claims. Ms. Morgenson writes: “Stopping the reviews before they are finished means that the banks will be allowed to claim that abuses were rare and that $10 billion is an adequate penalty.”
A group of the world’s top regulators and central bankers on Sunday gave banks more time to meet rules designed to prevent financial crises. Keep crawl-space vents open in winter
I used to think the same thing, but the
energy crisis of the 1970s led to a lot of research on how to maintain homes to
conserve energy.
Over a period of time, it was discovered that making a home substantially airtight would also trap moisture and other gases inside the living environment. Warm moisture-laden air or humid air naturally travels from the warmer areas outside the home to cooler areas inside the home, where it can condensate back into water.
Inside the living areas of our homes, we control the flow of moisture using fans, air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Otherwise, a tightly sealed home could become a garden for mold spores.
We also need to control the levels of humidity in the crawl space, where water vapors can saturate the wood floor system, which then can lead to wood rot, mold growth, decay and structural damage.
Many of the crawl spaces I’ve inspected have elevated-humidity problems. To control the humidity, you open the crawl vents in the winter to allow the warm moist air to flow naturally to the cooler, drier outside environment.
In the summer, you close the vents to keep the warm moist air outside and away from the much cooler, drier air in the crawl space.
However, if you have a water line near one of the crawl-pace vents, that vent should be permanently sealed and insulated to prevent freeze damage to the water line.
Remove garden hoses from water faucets. A modern antifreeze faucet can be damaged if the hose is left in place all winter. If the faucet has an inside shut-off valve, close it until spring.
Check to see if you have a kitchen or bathroom sink with plumbing on or next to an outside wall; the pipes could freeze. To protect the water pipes, leave the cabinet doors open or let the water trickle slowly during the night.
Placing a 60-watt lamp on the floor just outside the cabinet doors also can provide enough additional heat to prevent freezing. Never place a light fixture inside the cabinet.
Insulate the water lines in the crawl space or basement. Insulation conserves hot water while you are using it and prevents condensation from forming on the cold water pipes in the summer.
Locate the main water shut-off valve and make sure it is operable. Most older valves are difficult to close and many will leak when you do turn them off. A minor repair now could save you from an expensive repair later if you are unable to turn the water off in an emergency.

Not ‘his-story’ but his ‘tale’
‘I have lived to tell the tale, I have lived to tell my story’, how
many can have the joy of saying that at least knowing that there is a
large faithful audience ready to listen to every word? Living to tell
the tale is the autobiography of Gabriel Garcia Marquez who is, without,
a doubt one of the literary figures of the times we know and have known
to bequeath an incomparable literary legacy to the world.
Marquez’s Living to tell the tale is enchanting. It gives a startling revelation of the mad magic of ‘Macondo’ that unfolds in One Hundred Years of Solitude. The real location of Macondo, hidden in the hometown of his maternal line of the family described in the book is a fascinating place that time seems to have forgotten and left onto itself, where what is very much the real is something that seems from (as Marquez puts it) from another life, another world, another time.
The opulent house of the Buendias in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the life size saints, the candy animal baking avocation of Ursula the redoubtable matriarch, the little goldfish with gemstones placed as eyes made by Colonel Aureliano Buendia, and the astounding story behind the seventy chamber pots was all actually rooted right there in his own heritage, his own family’s history that became a rich legacy of memories to Marquez that was instrumental to attain his ‘writership’.
The literary technique of ‘Magical realism’ for which Marquez is world acclaimed is shown in Living to tell the tale as clearly impelled by his own vibrant and colourful life and the lunacies and idiosyncrasies that characterised it. According to the book, as a child Marquez seems to have had a propensity to interpret in his mind a meaning of his own about certain mundane occurrences that he keenly observed, being self aware of how an artistic perception was being formed for himself on through his senses. It shows how his psyche appropriated them and gave them certain exaggerations rendering meanings that were entertaining as well as introspective.
‘Papalelo’, Marquez’s grandfather seems to have been the rudiment inspiring the character of Colonel Aureliano Buendia – both ‘sowed wild oats’ and were civil war veterans. Marquez’s own father – ‘papa’ – seems to be the basis for Jose Arcadio Bunendia – the patriarch of the Buendias.I suppose it could be said that in desiring these magically real characters each would have been inspired by one actual person or the fusing of several into one. Real life persons whose character traits would have some interesting trait that could be exploited to be develop into being engaging, entertaining when blown up through exaggeration to make a larger than life ‘magical’ character. It seems Marquez’s approach would be to focus on some elemental character tenet that serves as the base to build the character on and these tenets could be of one or many real life persons.
When mapping One Hundred Years of Solitude through reading Living to tell the tale it seems the ‘magically real’ could be anything from the ‘unlikely’ to the ‘improbable’ to the downright ‘impossible’ by standards of scientific rationality.A woman, who lives to see great-great grandchildren like Ursula Buendia, seems an unlikelihood – but then Marquez’s own grandmother actually does. The blindness that doesn’t hinder Ursula’s movement through the house accredited to an enigmatic memory based on ‘mental navigation’ seems in the range of unlikely and improbable one could say. But a trickle of blood from a gunshot wound runs a course navigating its way to go all the way across town and to the presence of Ursula defies all known laws of physics, and the same goes for the flying carpet of the gypsies! Yet the scientific basis of what is possible and not in the real world is not the architect of Marquez’s Macondo. It is the openness to the possibility of the fantastic to make ‘What if?’ the credo to substantiate the ‘rationale’ of the fictionalising mind of the storyteller.

The real location of Macondo, hidden in the hometown of his maternal line of the family described in the book is a fascinating place that time seems to have forgotten and left onto itself, where what is very much the real is something that seems from (as Marquez puts it) from another life, another world, another time.
The opulent house of the Buendias in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the life size saints, the candy animal baking avocation of Ursula the redoubtable matriarch, the little goldfish with gemstones placed as eyes made by Colonel Aureliano Buendia, and the astounding story behind the seventy chamber pots was all actually rooted right there in his own heritage, his own family’s history that became a rich legacy of memories to Marquez that was instrumental to attain his ‘writership’.
The literary technique of ‘Magical realism’ for which Marquez is world acclaimed is shown in Living to tell the tale as clearly impelled by his own vibrant and colourful life and the lunacies and idiosyncrasies that characterised it. According to the book, as a child Marquez seems to have had a propensity to interpret in his mind a meaning of his own about certain mundane occurrences that he keenly observed, being self aware of how an artistic perception was being formed for himself on through his senses. It shows how his psyche appropriated them and gave them certain exaggerations rendering meanings that were entertaining as well as introspective.
‘Papalelo’, Marquez’s grandfather seems to have been the rudiment inspiring the character of Colonel Aureliano Buendia – both ‘sowed wild oats’ and were civil war veterans. Marquez’s own father – ‘papa’ – seems to be the basis for Jose Arcadio Bunendia – the patriarch of the Buendias.I suppose it could be said that in desiring these magically real characters each would have been inspired by one actual person or the fusing of several into one. Real life persons whose character traits would have some interesting trait that could be exploited to be develop into being engaging, entertaining when blown up through exaggeration to make a larger than life ‘magical’ character. It seems Marquez’s approach would be to focus on some elemental character tenet that serves as the base to build the character on and these tenets could be of one or many real life persons.
When mapping One Hundred Years of Solitude through reading Living to tell the tale it seems the ‘magically real’ could be anything from the ‘unlikely’ to the ‘improbable’ to the downright ‘impossible’ by standards of scientific rationality.A woman, who lives to see great-great grandchildren like Ursula Buendia, seems an unlikelihood – but then Marquez’s own grandmother actually does. The blindness that doesn’t hinder Ursula’s movement through the house accredited to an enigmatic memory based on ‘mental navigation’ seems in the range of unlikely and improbable one could say. But a trickle of blood from a gunshot wound runs a course navigating its way to go all the way across town and to the presence of Ursula defies all known laws of physics, and the same goes for the flying carpet of the gypsies! Yet the scientific basis of what is possible and not in the real world is not the architect of Marquez’s Macondo. It is the openness to the possibility of the fantastic to make ‘What if?’ the credo to substantiate the ‘rationale’ of the fictionalising mind of the storyteller.
