Scientists have spent decades trying to build flexible plastic solar
cells efficient enough to compete with conventional cells made of
silicon. To boost performance, research groups have tried creating new
plastic materials that enhance the flow of electricity through the solar
cell. Several groups expected to achieve good results by redesigning
pliant polymers of plastic into orderly, silicon-like crystals, but the
flow of electricity did not improve.
Recently, scientists
discovered that disorder at the molecular level actually improves the
polymers' performance. Now Stanford University researchers have an
explanation for this surprising result. Their findings, published in the
Aug. 4 online edition of the journal Nature Materials, could speed up
the development of low-cost, commercially available plastic solar
cells.
"People used to think that if you made the polymers more like silicon they would perform better,A indoorpositioningsystem has
real weight in your customer's hand." said study co-author Alberto
Salleo, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at
Stanford. "But we found that polymers don't naturally form nice,
well-ordered crystals. They form small, disordered ones, and that's
perfectly fine."
In the study, the Stanford team focused on a
class of organic materials known as conjugated or semiconducting
polymers – chains of carbon atoms that have the properties of plastic,
and the ability to absorb sunlight and conduct electricity.
Discovered
nearly 40 years ago, semiconducting polymers have long been considered
ideal candidates for ultrathin solar cells, light-emitting diodes and
transistors. Unlike silicon crystals used in rooftop solar panels,
semiconducting polymers are lightweight and can be processed at room
temperature with ink-jet printers and other inexpensive techniques. So
why aren't buildings today covered with plastic solar cells?
"One
reason they haven't been commercialized is because of poor

need to move through the materials fast, but semiconducting polymers
have poor electron mobility."
To find out why, Salleo joined
Rodrigo Noriega and Jonathan Rivnay, who were Stanford graduate students
at the time, in analyzing more than two decades of experimental data.
"Over the years, many people designed stiffer polymers with the goal of
making highly organized crystals, but the charge mobility remained
relatively poor," Salleo said. "Then several labs created polymers that
looked disordered and yet had very high charge mobility. It was a puzzle
why these new materials worked better than the more structured
crystalline ones."
To observe the disordered materials at the
microscopic level, the Stanford team took samples to the SLAC National
Accelerator Laboratory for X-ray analysis. The X-rays revealed a
molecular structure resembling a fingerprint gone awry.Get the led fog

spaghetti, while others formed tiny crystals just a few molecules long.
"The
crystals were so small and disordered you could barely infer their
presence from X-rays," Salleo said. "In fact, scientists had assumed
they weren't there."
By analyzing light emissions from
electricity flowing through the samples, the Stanford team determined
that numerous small crystals were scattered throughout the material and
connected by long polymer chains, like beads in a necklace. The small
size of the crystals was a crucial factor in improving overall
performance, Salleo said.
"Being small enables a charged
electron to go through one crystal and rapidly move on to the next one,"
he said. "The long polymer chain then carries the electron quickly
through the material. That explains why they have a much higher charge
mobility than larger, unconnected crystals."
Another
disadvantage of large crystalline polymers is that they tend to be
insoluble and therefore cannot be produced by ink-jet printing or other
cheap processing technologies, he added.
"Our conclusion is that
you don't need to make something so rigid that it forms large
crystals," Salleo said. "You need to design something with small,
disordered crystals packed close together and connected by polymer
chains. Electrons will move through the crystals like on a superhighway,
ignoring the rest of the plastic material, which is amorphous and

some sense, the synthetic chemists were ahead of us, because they made
these new materials but didn't know why they worked so well," he said.
"Now that they know, they can go out and design even better ones."

Bennett's Best
Cheyenne Ketter-Franklin is valedictorian of Bennett High, one of
Buffalos worst-performing schools. Its the type of institution whose
problems people sum up using terms like urban and inner city. In 2010,
the state slapped the school with the label PLA: Persistently
Lowest-Achieving. Privately, many local residents will skip the
euphemisms and admit to thinking of Bennett as some kind of hellhole.
Here are some things you may already know or suspect about the school: 101 students dropped out in 2011-12. The four-year graduation rate for freshmen entering in 2008 was 31.6 percent. One of Cheyennes best friends, Breone Boles, says its not unusual to hear a classmate tell a teacher, Fuck you.
Heres what may surprise you about Bennett: Cheyenne says theres no other high schoolpublic or privatethat she would have rather attended. If she could roll back time and start her education over again, she would still choose Bennett.
Maybe youve said things like this yourself. Lots of people do. William Franklin Jr., Cheyennes father, said an acquaintance once told him that an A at a school like Bennett was like a B in the suburbs. Breone said she has gone to recruitment fairs where parents refuse to take her brochures. People imagine a place where students smoke in the bathrooms and fight in dilapidated hallways every day.
But thats not what its like, Cheyenne said: I find it inappropriate and discouraging when people think that way and have those predesignated thoughts when they dont know.
Its not that Bennett is trouble-free. The institutions problems are varied and obvious: Fights do break out. Girls do get pregnant. Not all students feel safe. Some classrooms are loud and poorly managed. Tracie Batcho, a favorite teacher of Cheyennes, said when she first started at the school, her biggest shock was the language teenagers used to address adults: F you, F yourself.
But Bennett is also a place where young people find direction, where teachers like Batcho helped Cheyenne discover what she wanted to study in college. At Bennett, Cheyenne met Breone, learned about herself and the world, tutored classmates to keep them from failing, and watched some students overcome staggering odds to graduatelike the young mothers who came to class day after day, determined to earn a degree because they messed up once and didnt want to make another mistake.

Cheyenne shielded herself from it, mostly, because what else could she do? She surrounded herself with friends who were responsible. She still wonders about it sometimes, why he gave up so much for seemingly so little. He was never mean or malicious to her, but I felt like he just ruined his future for himself, she said.
I almost feel at fault because I felt I should have kept him out of that track, and it makes me a little discouraged, Cheyenne said. If you want a poster boy for how your past doesnt mean anything with your present, it would have been him; he had a bad upbringing and he always rose above it.
She doesnt like to think about it: the wasted potential, the life thrown away. It does boast a few rather incredible amenities, most notably scads of outdoor space (3,106 square feet of it) and 27,500 square feet of air rights (which the new owner would presumably sell to the developer of another luxury condo). And while many properties in the more than $20 million category have terraces galore; what makes the Whitmans unusual is how the space is laid out. Sunset Memorial was quiet that Saturday afternoon. I stood in the

It had been eight months since his burial, eight months since his body had been found in a packing crate beneath an overpass on Interstate 4. Now he rested here, in a corner of the cemetery set aside for the indigent.
Id said one goodbye to J.W. on the day he was lowered into the ground. Now I offered another.
