I probably shouldn’t admit this but there is one area in numismatics that I love above all else: the coinage of the Dahlonega mint. There is something about the coinage from this southern branch mint that appeals to me a little more than any of the other mints. And as someone who loves Dahlonega gold coins, I am always on the lookout for interesting Dahlonega-related knick-knacks.

The problem is that there just aren’t many interesting contemporary items from this mint. The coin was made in brass and later gilt plated. It shows extremely good work, especially on the reverse. If you think about it, a contemporary counterfeit Dahlonega half eagle makes sense, especially in 1842 which was just the third year in which the new Liberty Head half eagle was produced. For many people, especially those who didn’t live that close to Dahlonega, there was not much familiarity with the new coins from this mint and a reasonable facsimile stood a decent chance of entering circulation and staying there.

A goodly amount of artistic and technological sophistication was required and this doesn’t seem to be something that was found in excess in North Georgia in the early 1840′s. As someone who is a major dealer in Dahlonega gold, I won’t collect the coins from this mint because I don’t want to compete against my clients. So this is the closest thing to a “real” piece of D mint gold that I can hope to own. But beyond that, I love the rarity and the history of this piece.

How Did the MTA Restore Subway Service in Time

This morning, temperatures dropped, vast parts of the region remained without power, and New Jersey commuter lines were in a stranglehold. But there was one major, if improbable, sign of hope: Some 80 percent of the New York City subway system was up and running. Not everything went perfectly — there were delays and crowds and, for those living on defunct lines,We specialize in howo concrete mixer, long walks or bus rides to open stations — but it was a far cry from the prolonged collapse many feared after the wrath of Sandy.

The challenges, as detailed by MTA chairman Joe Lhota the morning after the storm, were daunting. Seven tunnels under the East River were flooded. An unknown amount of equipment had been exposed to corrosive salt water. Yet the system recovered in time for Monday’s morning commute, which even the MTA’s usual critics acknowledged was nothing short of a miracle. How did they do it?

After the 2010 blizzard, which embarrassed the mayor and took out the subway for days, the MTA was too slow bringing its trains and equipment somewhere safe and dry. “We kind of dropped the ball and we learned from that,” said Tom Prendergast, president of New York City Transit, the part of the MTA that handles city subways and buses. This time the MTA shut everything down on Sunday evening, the day before the storm arrived. Waiting longer would have wasted time and man power needed for the cleanup afterwards.

Even so, Prendergast says, the system wasn’t prepared for what came next. While Irene had brought the water within a foot or two of flooding the subway entrances and ventilation gratings, Sandy’s fourteen-foot surges brought the water gushing in. Half of the subway system’s fourteen under-river tubes flooded. A few filled up end to end, much like the Department of Transportation’s Battery Tunnel. They couldn’t even send workers out to assess them until after the second surge at the next high tide Tuesday morning.

Pumping began soon after — or “dewatering,” as the pumping industry calls it. Other city agencies had to rely on outside contractors to pump their tunnels. But it happens that the subway system already had its own toys. Each of the system’s under-river tunnels has a sump to deal with everyday seepage, and each also has a tube fixed to the side called a discharge line. Starting Tuesday, the system sent in its “pump trains” — diesel powered trains with five or six cars, run by just five or six workers. Underneath the trains are pumps, moving hundreds of gallons of water back into the river every minute.Find detailed product information for Low price howo tipper truck and other products. “You take the pump train and you bury the first car up to the floor level so it’s underwater,” Prendergast says, “and you hook it up to the discharge line and you start pumping the tunnel dry.”

The only problem was the MTA had seven flooded tunnels and just three pump trains. It can take up to 100 hours to pump the largest tubes, fully loaded with water, or as little as five or six hours for those that are smaller or less fully flooded. It was time to prioritize. “If you let the size of the effort overcome you, you can’t get started,” Prendergast says. “So you just take on the most important tunnels first. It’s like the old story: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” The highest priority was the 4, 5, and 6 Lexington line — probably the highest capacity line in the United States in terms of customers carried — which connects to the Joraleman Street tunnel. Then there was Clark Street tunnel, which connects to the West Side IRT 2 and 3 trains. Those lines were luckily not completely flooded. The Army Corps of Engineers helped out with some crucial work on the Montague Street tunnel, but Prendergast says the MTA handled the majority of the effort.

At the same time tunnels were being pumped, there were some 600 miles of other track to examine for damage, at least twenty miles of which is exposed to the elements, like the elevated Dyer Avenue line, the Sea Beach line, and the Brighton line in Brooklyn. “We had a lot of downed trees and debris that had to be cleared, so that effort started,” Prendergast says. These same workers also cleaned garbage and debris and silt out of the freshly pumped tunnels.

Next came the moment of truth: Assessing the damage of salt water on the equipment in the tunnels. “You can see right away if the tracks are okay,” Prendergast says. “But everything else — power to move trains and energize communications and signals equipment — they can do some tests, but the ultimate test is powering it up.” They found that different tunnels were affected in different ways, depending on the mix of salt water from the ocean and fresh water from the Hudson. “If it’s more fresh water, all you have to do is dry out the equipment — you don’t necessarily have to clean it. But if you have salt water, it dries and leaves a salt residue. Salt is conductive. So you want to clean that salt off. Otherwise you can have a short circuit and you could burn the equipment.”

In this effort, the MTA found they had been given a little grace period, courtesy of the massive power failure in Manhattan south of 39th Street. Instead of the city waiting for the equipment to be cleaned and tested, it was the subway system waiting for the electricity to run final tests. On Thursday, Lhota announced that some service was being restored — the 7 between 74th Street and Main in Queens, and the M between 34th Street in Manhattan and Jamaica in Queens. He also said tunnels for the 4, 5, and F were just waiting for Con Ed to turn on the power. “We were trying to communicate we were willing to get back to normal as soon as possible,” Prendergast says.

By then, the “bus bridge” between Brooklyn and Manhattan had proven woefully inadequate, with long lines stretching around the Barclays Center and tremendous traffic making most commutes practically pointless. “If the bus bridge did anything,” Prendergast says, “it helped underscore for people how our rail system has a lot more utility than our bus system.”

The first lines connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan opened on Saturday, after Con Ed turned on the lights. On Monday, it was back to business, more or less. Of course, major challenges remain: Many stations will remain closed for a long time, like the South Ferry on the 1 line and 207th Street on the A line because of water. The A, L, B, and G lines, among others, are still partially or entirely closed. The tracks across Jamaica Bay to the Rockaways are devastated and could take weeks or months to repair.

In the future, Prendergast says, the system will have to rethink the way it designs its infrastructure. At the very least, ventilation ducts and gratings should be moved higher up or built so that they can be covered and made water-tight along with station entrances. But today, at least, there was a chance for the MTA to exhale a little. “New Yorkers are very resilient; we could not have gotten through it this far without their support,” says Prendergast. “When I look back, given all that we were able to take care of and get service restored, it was pretty amazing to do all we could do.Our technology gives rtls systems developers the ability.”

National Renewable Energy Lab's newest facility

The benefits of renewable energy are plain, but thus far the grid has not been modernized to really accommodate these important sources of energy in the most effective ways. And that's because this kind of megawatt-scale integration is difficult to find.

"We're looking at how to take technologies and integrate it with the much larger system, so that's the key and differentiating factor of this particular facility...how all these technologies integrate together and integrate with the larger power system, electric system, fuel systems that we have," Kroposki said inside a shack on the construction site before the tour got underway.

He added: "It's really designed around bringing together a variety of...energy systems.... One of the unique aspects of this facility is that it's not single-purposed focused. It crosses all these technologies and it's been designed in a very flexible manner to allow you to bring in equipment and interconnect it into one spot, but have access to the variety of resources throughout the system."

In other words, throughout the lab, there are sections with specific areas of focus and targeted functions, but on the whole, these separate areas are connected, theoretically allowing research to be more expansive. Overall, the ESIF has four main laboratory components focused on electrical systems, thermal systems, fuel systems and high-performance computing and data analysis. In that last category, the ESIF will feature a supercomputer that NREL says will be the fastest computing system in the world dedicated to advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The on-site data center itself will also be one of the most energy efficient centers of its kind in the world.

Throughout its expansion projects, NREL has emphasized the importance of building facilities that are themselves green, and they say the ESIF will be no exception. A series of energy conservation strategies will allow the massive facility, at minimum, to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification, NREL says. For example, the ESIF will reuse waste energy from the data center to maximize building and campus heating. It will also use "underfloor air distribution" for interior cooling and ventilation. Additionally, the facility will rely on day-lighting and high-efficiency lighting.

Ultimately, if this facility operates as planned, the ESIF will directly impact utility bills with its innovations. As we noted in our feature, Jeff Baker, the DOE's director of laboratory operations in the Golden field office, says it this way: "If you help a utility company operate a system more efficiently, those efficiencies are passed along to you."

HCC solar panel deal could save energy without liability

If Harford Community College's trustees approve a proposed power purchase agreement Monday evening, solar panels installed on rooftops of several building will result in very little financial liability for the institution but potentially large savings on the college's energy bills, HCC officials say.

"The only liability is if the price of electricity goes down significantly from where it is now," says Rick Johnson, the college's vice president of finance and operations. Last week, the college met to discuss a possible partnership with Tecta Solar to install a solar energy system on campus and sell the panels to a third party who would then sell the energy generated from the panels back to the college at a discounted rate.

"It's a good opportunity for the college to hedge our energy requirements for the next 20 years," he said.

If approved, the agreement with Tecta would last 20 years, with options to renew at the end of the contract or buy the system outright.

The college would not own the energy system, but basically lease its rooftop space for the solar panels to generate energy.

Whichever company buys the panels from Tecta will take responsibility for those panels - maintenance, replacing, inspections and insurance.The reality of convenient handsfreeaccess contro.

Tax credits for using alternative energy and selling the power back to the college is what will appeal to the third party buyer.

The federal government is offering "incentives," Johnson continued, through tax credits to companies to invest in alternative energy.

Since HCC is a tax-exempt non-profit institution, it isn't able to take advantage of those credits.

Where the college does benefit, however, is being able to purchase discounted energy from the third party that buys the energy produced by the panels on the HCC buildings.

During last week's meeting where the trustees reviewed the proposal, Deborah Wrobel, dean of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, explained how the system would work.

Using a hand-generated wheel attached to a light bulb on a wooden board, Wrobel said traditional energy is created from the interaction of a large magnet and coils of wire on a large scale at power plans. Steam spins the magnet, she continued, and creates a reaction with the wire, which gives us electricity.

How a solar panel works, Wrobel explained, is with layers of silicone - one with a negative charge and another with a positive charge.

"I'm sure that as technology changes we're going to change with the time, too," Johnson said. "That's part of the sustainability mission of this college."

In June 2011, Harford County Public Schools activated a 1.2-megawatt multi-school solar program, very similar to what HCC now plans to implement.

HCPS stated then that the program is expected to generate more than 28 million kilowatt hours of energy over 20 years.

"Covering six school properties with more than 6,400 photovoltaic panels, Harford County Public Schools paid no upfront capital costs for the solar energy deployments that promise to reduce overall energy costs with long-term predictable energy pricing while reducing the county's energy demand from the grid," according to a June 2011 summary of the program written by the school system.

The district put out request for proposals and four companies responded by the May 10 deadline. After analysis, Knost recommended StraightUp Solar because of its St. Louis location, the options it offered and its monitoring systems.

Knost proposed Oakville High, Bernard Middle, Hagemann Elementary, the Witzel Learning Center and either Bierbaum or Beasley Elementary schools for the solar project.

StraightUp Solar will install a 25 kilowatt system on each school’s roof. Each building will net approximately $26,132 in savings over the 20-year lease based on a 5 percent annual utility rate increase projection.

The struggling automobile industry is ripe for disruption, and Apple could definitely help in this department. While it's great that Apple is building tools for easy and safe use of iPhone, iPod, and iPad devices while driving, Apple can do much more.

If Apple really wanted to help drivers, it would work with a company it likes (maybe Mercedes, Steve Jobs' favorite car company) to build a better in-vehicle system for entertainment and navigation. An in-car system by Apple would be extremely intelligent, and it could show users what they need to know about their driving habits and fuel consumption while also offering plenty of options for finding locations and getting directions to them, as well as playing music -- via Internet radio like Pandora or from a nearby iPod.

In fact, it looks like Apple may already taking this direction. In February, Mercedes Benz unveiled plans to use Siri, Apple's virtual personal assistant exclusive to the iPhone 4S, to power its A-class electronics system called "Drive Kit Plus," which will essentially let drivers access their iPhone apps while driving using voice commands.About 1 in 5 people in the UK have recurring coldsores. Yet, a technology company with the clout and power of Apple should not have to be a third-party accessory maker for cars. No, Apple should be thinking much bigger than that: If Apple is so set on building complete closed-end systems, maybe it should consider entering the car-making business. Apple has nothing to prove in the world of technology, but maybe if Google can perfect its driverless-car, Apple will feel compelled to build a car of its own.

US gov't sets stiff tariffs on China solar panels

The Obama administration moved Thursday to impose stiff new tariffs on solar panels made in China, finding that Chinese companies are improperly flooding the U.S. market with government-subsidized products.

The Commerce Department said Chinese producers had dumped solar cells and panels in the United States at margins ranging from 31 percent to nearly 250 percent. If the preliminary ruling is upheld, tariffs averaging 31 percent could be imposed on Chinese solar-panel imports.

The tariffs would be in addition to fees ranging from 2.9 percent to 4.73 percent imposed in March after the department found that China is improperly subsidizing its solar manufacturers.

The tariffs announced Thursday were higher than expected and could ratchet up trade tensions between the two countries.

Several U.S. solar panel makers, led by Oregon-based SolarWorld, had asked the government to penalize China for dumping low-price products on U.S. markets. The companies are struggling against fierce competition from China as well as weakening demand in Europe and other key markets, just as President Barack Obama is working to promote renewable energy.

U.S. companies' complaints about their Chinese rivals have been amplified by the controversy surrounding Solyndra Inc., a California-based solar panel maker that went bankrupt last year after winning a half-billion-dollar federal loan from the Obama administration.

Solyndra's collapse embarrassed Obama and prompted sharp criticism from Mitt Romney and other Republicans who are critical of Obama's green energy policies. Solyndra, which is not involved in the trade case, cited Chinese competition as a key reason for its failure.

A majority of U.S. solar panel installers oppose tariffs on Chinese panels, arguing that less expensive imports have helped make solar panels more affordable for U.S. customers.

The companies also worried that China could retaliate against U.S. companies, noting that Chinese authorities have announced their own probe into whether U.S. support for renewable energy companies hurts foreign suppliers.

"This is the first step to a trade war between the U.S. and China," said Jigar Shah, leader of a coalition of solar companies that oppose U.S. tariffs.

The Commerce Department decision will increase U.S. solar prices "precisely at the moment solar power is becoming competitive with fossil-fuel-generated electricity,Choose from our large selection of cableties," said Shah, president of the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy.

Members of the coalition include California-based SunEdison, Recurrent Energy, SolarCity and Westinghouse Solar, as well as China-based Suntech Power Holdings Co., one of the companies affected by the Commerce case.

SolarWorld president Gordon Brinser said the Commerce Department had merely confirmed that Chinese manufacturers have illegally dumped solar cells and panels in the U.S. market,Proxense's advanced timelocationsystem technology. giving their products an unfair advantage.

SolarWorld Industries America Inc., a subsidiary of Germany's SolarWorld AG, is the largest U.S. maker of silicon solar cells and panels. The company was joined by six other manufacturers, including Wisconsin-based Helios Solar Works, in filing the unfair trade complaint.

Shah and other critics say steep tariffs will lead to the loss of thousands of U.S. jobs, but SolarWorld's Brinser dismissed that as "doomsday" talk.

Solar power is growing rapidly in the United States, he said, adding that demand for solar panels will continue to rise as states set standards for renewable energy and consumers see benefits from solar power.

Andrew Beebe, chief commercial officer for Suntech's California-based subsidiary, called the duties "not justified by fact."

The ruling sets up "harmful trade barriers" between the U.S. and China, Beebe said,Enhancements to RSS Based indoortracking. adding that he hopes the two countries engage in "constructive dialogue" to avert a solar panel trade war.

"Suntech opposes trade barriers at any point in the global solar supply chain," he said in a statement. "We need more competition and innovation, not litigation."

Trade tensions with China are especially sensitive at a time when the United States and other Western economies want to boost technology exports to revive economic growth and cut high unemployment.

The U.S. and China are two of the world's biggest markets for solar, wind and other renewable energy technology. Both governments are promoting their own suppliers in hopes of generating higher-paid technology jobs.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee's subcommittee on trade, said the Commerce Department decision goes far beyond a dispute over solar panels.

"Free trade does not mean trade free from rules," Wyden said, calling the decision a boost for a rules-based global trading system. "A victory for that system is a victory for American workers and all others who don't need to cheat to compete," Wyden said.

In its ruling Thursday, Commerce also granted SolarWorld's request for a finding of "critical circumstances" to counter a recent flood of Chinese imports into the U.S. market ahead of the widely anticipated decision. As a result, preliminary dumping tariffs will be imposed retroactive to late February.

Mattress renewal taking shape but price hikes are a concern

Indicators are positive as the High Point Market opens for its spring edition. I've been hearing good reports about retail sales, which is always a helpful sign. For their part, bedding producers come to the Furniture Capital of the World loaded with new lines. And the bedding lineup here is expanding.

Perhaps, as the flowers burst into bloom in this season of rebirth, the mattress category will usher in its own season of renewal, a time of robust sales bursting forth across the country.

Or maybe not.

But before we get to causes for concern this year, we begin with the positive side of the ledger. Business was surprisingly robust at the bedding-rich Las Vegas Market earlier this year, a demonstration of positive retail moves and attitudes. That could also mean a nice lift for this High Point Market.

As we noted earlier, major bedding producers have a plethora of new lines: Sealy is showing its new flagship Posturepedic line, Simmons has new flagship Beautyrest lines, and Serta offers its new flagship Perfect Sleeper line and its iComfort gel memory foam line. Given the importance of the flagship lines and their broad distribution, retailers are sure to be drawn to them.

The International Home Furnishings Center continues to focus on the bedding segment and welcomes a Top 10 producer back to High Point this market: Comfort Solutions. The No. 6 producer has a big showroom in the IHFC, where it will show its "no sag" Extended Life line, an upgraded Sleep ID line, a revamped Laura Ashley line and a new two-sided bedding line.

Also new to the IHFC is the Specialty Sleep Assn., which showcases emerging new sleep technologies, and Vivon, which has a new partnership with Brookstone for a massage mattress.

Returning IHFC exhibitor Paramount introduces its "Sleep for Success!" line, keyed to its partnership with James Maas, the sleep expert who co-authored the book, "Sleep for Success!" Paramount also unveils a line developed in partnership with A. H. Beard, the Australian bedding power.

Those are just some of the product highlights. Space limits me from listing more.
The negative? Price increases. Bedding producers tell me raw materials prices are rising. That is a particularly unwelcome development at this point in the year. Retailers are never happy to hear about price increases and might resist them. That, in turn, would mean shorter margins for producers or a move to less expensive (translation: lower quality) materials. It might mean both.

How will all this play out in High Point? That's one of the story lines I will be following.
