Insult to Injury

After David Hernandez had another rough outing on Saturday night, he was optioned to Reno with the corresponding move to be made this morning. Things were bit surprising when, given the depth (or lack thereof) in the Diamondbacks' bullpen, it became known that Matt Davidson was being called up. Shortly after that news broke, it was announced that a second move from the 25-man roster had been made, with Eric Chavez being placed on the 15-day DL with knee and back soreness. 

So the Diamondbacks went into Sunday's rubber game with LHRP Eury De La Rosa in the bullpen, and Matt Davidson on his way. Despite being called up Sunday morning, Davidson was unable to arrive in Phoenix in time to start the afternoon affair. 

Zeke Spruill was tabbed to start against the meager New York Mets lineup Unfortunately, the Mets showed far more plate discipline then they were generally known for and managed to make Spruill labour through the first. After getting one out,These partymerchantaccount can, apparently, operate entirely off the grid. a hit and two walk loaded the bases, prompting an early first inning visit to the mound from Kirk Gibson. Spruill then promptly induced a groundball to first, and it looked good. But, as luck would have it for the Diamondbacks, Goldscmidt committed a rare fielding error at first and the bases emptied, leading to three unearned runs. With Mike Baxter standing on second, Anthony Recker hit a line shot down the third base line that Prado had glance off the heel of his glove. This allowed Baxter to score. The shot was credited as a double, but since Baxter was on second as the result of Goldschmidt's flub, the run was still unearned. With Josh Collmenter warming up, Spruill managed to stop the bleeding and send it to the Diamondbacks' half of the first. 

The Diamondbacks got off to a good start in their half of the first. A.J. Pollock led off with a single, bringing speed to the base paths. Prado would foul out, and Goldschmidt would give a ball a ride for a long out, and the Diamondbacks would find themselves with two out and Pollock still on first. That would bring up Aaron Hill to try and get something going. Sure enough, Hill crushed a double down the third base line that bounced of the Diamondback bullpen, scoring the speedy Pollock from first. That would bring up the revitalized Cody Ross. With two out and Hill on second, Ross hit a ball hard to deep third, and took off for first. Running down the line, Ross had a misstep and, while trying to recover his balance, had his right leg spasm and slightly hyper-extend. Ross crumpled to the ground and said something which incited Mets first baseman Ike Davis to immediately call for the trainers. Ross would have to be carted off the field on a stretcher. Later it would be revealed that Cody Ross had dislocated his right hip, very bad news indeed for the Diamondbacks. That would bring in Matt Davidson (who only arrived about an hour before game time) to play third, with Prado shifting to left. 

The second inning would fly past rather unremarkably, though Tuffy Gosewisch may very well remember it as he got a base hit on his first at-bat at Chase Field. 

The Mets tacked on another run in the top of the third on a hit-and-run play with two out and Quintanilla up to bat. While Davis managed to score easily from third, Mike Baxter attempted to score from first on a single to A.J. Pollock and was thrown out at home by five feet to end the inning. 

A.J. Pollock continued to do his job as a leadoff hitter in the bottom of the third, slapping a single to center. With Ross already out of the game, one of the last things that the Diamondbacks could afford was the loss of another position player. A bad call on strike three by home plate umpire Laz Diaz nearly resulted in exactly that as Prado had a long, heated conversation with the veteran umpire about his lack of visual acuity. After Kirk Gibson retrieved his irate left fielder Paul Goldschmidt walked and Aaron Hill climbed into the box. On an o-1 count, Hill deposited a thigh high fastball into the left field bleachers closing the gap to 5-4 in favour of New York. The game was fairly quiet until the bottom of the sixth. Matt Davidson led off the inning with a single to left field for his first major league hit. Parra followed that up with a horrible bunt back to the pitcher, Niese for a fielder's choice. Gosewisch knocked one back to Niese as well, but Quintanilla bobbled the throw from Niese trying to turn the double play and everyone was safe. As a result of the error, Pennington came to the dish with one out and runners at first and second. He promptly struck out looking. It was the fourth strikeout of the game for Niese, all four of them coming looking. Jason Kubel then came up to pinch-hit for Josh Collmenter, only to strike out swinging at a pitch up around his eyes. 

Joe Thatcher came on to pitch the seventh and got Daniel Murphy to pop out to Davidson in foul ground. Next was Ike Davis. Thatcher quickly got ahead of the former Sun Devil 0-2 before he lost him and issued a walk, putting Davis on for the eighth consecutive time in the series. A single by Flores would chase Thatcher from the game, at which point Joe Thatcher started giving Laz Diaz a piece of his mind in regards to the strike zone. Will Harris came on in relief and surrendered a three-run home run to Andrew Brown. 

With the Diamondbacks down four runs, he led off the bottom of the seventh with another single for his third hit of the game. Prado followed that up with a shot to third that Wilmer Flores turned into a fielder's choice at second on a bang-bang play. Paul Goldschmidt walked to bring up Aaron Hill with runners on first and second and only one out. Those who have been following the Diamondbacks closely this season can likely surmise what happened next. On a 2-1 count, Hill rolled over the top of the pitch and grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the Diamondback threat. 

The bottom of the eighth brought some excitement. With one out, Gerardo Parra doubled. Who runs al-Qaeda?

THE decision taken by Barack Obama on August 1st to close down for several days nearly two dozen diplomatic missions across the Middle East and North Africa and to issue a worldwide travel alert ran counter to the administrations oft-repeated claim that al-Qaeda is on the brink of strategic defeat. The alarm was triggered when Americas National Security Agency picked up electronic communication between Ayman al-Zawahiri, the global terror networks titular leader, and Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the founder of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), its Yemeni affiliate. The intelligence suggested that Mr Zawahiri had ordered a major attack or series of attacks to coincide with the end of Ramadan. A few days later it emerged that a plot to attack Western interests in Yemen, blow up an oil pipeline and seize ports had probably been thwarted. Al-Qaeda clearly remains a threat. But who, if anyone, really controls the sprawling organisation?

Since its origins in the early 1990s, al-Qaeda has shown itself to be a resilient and adaptable outfit. For all the trillions of dollars spent in support of George W. Bushs war on terror following the attacks of September 11th 2001, the loss of its training camps in Afghanistan, the relentless drone attacks ordered by Mr Obama on its sanctuaries in the tribal badlands of Pakistan and the raid in 2011 that killed its charismatic leader, Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda is still with us. But to survive, it has had to mutate.

"We don't have competitions like this in Australia. We don't have the carvers like this in Australia."The winner of the event on Sunday will take home $3,000. But most of the competitors say it's not the money or the prizes that keep them going, it's the camaraderie.

"I'm friends with a lot of the guys that carve and I like to hang out," points out Minnesota's Curtis Ingvoldstad. From a young age, no one could tame Evan Ebel

His parents sent him to special camps in Utah, Jamaica and Samoa for children with behavioral problems. Neighbors in the middle-class suburbs west of Denver shied away from a kid they described as "a handful."

By age 20, state prison had become Ebel's home. There, he joined a white supremacist gang and ended up in solitary confinement, a place his parents believe soon began to eat away at his already troubled mind.

Two months later, he is dead after a shootout with Texas authorities and is a suspect in the death of Colorado's state prisons chief, who was gunned down when he answered the front door of his house. Investigators have said the gun used to in the Texas shootout was the same weapon used to kill Colorado's prisons chief.

Now investigators are trying to piece together whether the final actions of the 28-year-old sprung from his own ideas or came at the direction of a prison gang - an idea some close to him reject.

The Colorado Independent website quoted a former inmate and member of the prison gang who said Ebel had left the group and was having a hard time integrating back into society.Online shopping for tooling from a great selection of Clothing.

"He told me that he needed to release some anxiety," the former inmate, Ryan Pettigrew, told the website, adding the killing did not seem like a gang hit. Ebel's parents haven't returned calls to The Associated Press for comment. But stories from both can be found in an online blog that those close to the family have confirmed the mother wrote, and legislative testimony from the father, who had begged the state to change its solitary confinement rules.

Mangue wrote that her son was an energetic child who accompanied his mother to hand out food and clothes to homeless people in Denver. That energy also was a problem, though. In an earlier online essay, written after visiting her son in prison, Mangue noted that she and Ebel's father began sending their son to camps for troubled youth when he was 12.

"He was the protective big brother and in this case, was unable to protect her," Mangue wrote. "His life deteriorated after that and he just became numb and lost his direction altogether, between using drugs and committing crimes."

Court records show that Ebel pleaded guilty a few months after his sister's death - in July 2004 - to holding a semi-automatic pistol to an acquaintance's head and stealing his wallet while they watched a Denver Broncos game on television. He was first sent to a halfway house. But after being linked to two other armed robberies, he went to state prison.

Corrections officials won't release detailed information about Ebel's prison time, saying the case remains under investigation. But court records show that in 2006, he punched a prison guard in the nose and was convicted of assaulting a corrections official. He was sent to solitary confinement, where he did "Navy Seal type exercises" and read obsessively - including "War and Peace" several times over, Mangue wrote. In January, Ebel was released on mandatory parole - meaning that even though he'd completed his sentence, he still had to abide by a parole agreement or be thrown back in prison. Some science is too sensitive to share

A Virginia congressman is calling for stricter security protocols for foreign scientists working at NASA after claims of security breaches at the agency's facilities in Hampton and the Silicon Valley.

What a serious crackdown could mean for U.S. scientists working with colleagues from other countries in rocket science, space exploration or less sensitive fields is unclear, local experts say. But they agree there's a need to keep sensitive scientific advances out of the wrong hands.

"While there is great benefit from international collaboration, there is also a need to protect scientific and technological advances that place the United States in a favorable position in the global economy, as well as to protect advances that help assure the safety of U.S. citizens and property," said Rob Wyman, spokesman at NASA Langley Research Center.

Wolf wants NASA to spend even more. He's also calling for NASA to audit security protocols for foreign access, review all foreign nationals with current agency credentials and halt all new credentialing of foreign nationals of designated "countries of concern" until stronger background checks are in place.

Wolf is chairman of the House Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations subcommittee, which funds NASA.

At the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in Gloucester Point, some research has commercial or even military applications, but none is proprietary or subject to federal restrictions, said spokesman David Malmquist.

"Until the outcome of any investigation is known, it's not possible for us to gauge how restrictive any new policies or laws might become," Malmquist said.

"We think this will be a non-issue for VIMS," he added, "unless universities face significant new prohibitions on hiring Chinese scientists or accepting Chinese graduate students."

China is of particular interest to Wolf, concerned over the growing number of high-tech thieves and cyber criminals stealing and dealing in U.S. trade secrets and technology. Living dangerously

SA is reeling after a series of shocks: the Marikana tragedy, Moody’s downgrading , a spike in the current account deficit, and now a sharp drop in the rand.

Since August, the mining strikes have spread like wildfire, igniting a run on the rand last week that has taken it back to its worst level since the global financial crisis.

What started out as a localised platinum strike has spread to gold, chrome, iron ore and parts of motor manufacturing, while the three-week-long transport strike has now broadened to include the country's ports. Acts of violence appear to be intensifying and reports of petrol shortages are increasing.

Investor concern over labour unrest, which culminated in AngloPlat's decision to fire 12000 workers last Friday, pushed the rand to R8,85/US$ that evening - its weakest level since April 2009.

Capital Economics' Africa economist Shilan Shah estimates that SA's total mining output will contract by around 20% in the third quarter, and that labour unrest could knock at least 1,5 percentage points off GDP overall in the second half of 2012.

Nomura emerging markets economist Peter Montalto expects a similar effect, adding that the current account deficit could remain in excess of 6% of GDP because of a likely drop in exports from both the mining and freight strikes.

But it is not time to panic. Though foreigners sold R1,1bn worth of JSE shares on Friday, bonds are holding up fairly well, suggesting that the rand is not about to collapse.

The country is not falling apart, says Montalto. Rather, what SA is more likely to experience is a grinding continuation of the status quo in which the economy delivers growth far below its potential.

"The problem we have with the current situation is that we cannot see how it ends easily without employers deciding themselves to grant large wage increases," says Montalto. "Government is doing nothing."

This is the picture that informed the Moody's downgrade on September 27.

Moody's has traditionally been more bullish on SA than the other two main rating agencies, Fitch and Standard and Poor's (S&P). Since 1996, Moody's has always given SA's economic policy makers the benefit of the doubt and for a long time it was vindicated.

But in February this year that confidence began to slip,The oreck XL professional air purifier, when Moody's reduced its outlook on SA's government debt ratings from stable to negative. The agency warned that political risk was rising at a time when SA's public finances were becoming constrained while the pace of growth was too slow to prevent unemployment and social tensions from escalating.

The events at Marikana proved the point, precipitating a full one notch cut in SA's rating last month. The move was equivalent to a vote of no confidence in the SA government, reflecting Moody's view of the SA authorities' "reduced capacity to handle the current political and economic situation and to implement effective strategies that could place the economy on a path to faster and more inclusive growth".

Moody's has kept SA's rating outlook on a negative watch given its fear that increasingly interventionist strategies are "highly likely" to flow from the ANC's December elective conference in Mangaung. "To the extent that such strategies would deter private investment and incoming capital into SA, they could further diminish its growth potential," Moody's warns.

Montalto agrees. "The local politico-economic debate is much like a fraught ideological battle one would have been more accustomed to in 1960s Britain," he says. "Unfortunately, we doubt SA will wake up to the consequences of its chosen policy direction until there is a meaningful market funding or domestic shock. It seems [the events at] Marikana [were] not enough of a shock."

But Montalto doesn't believe SA is headed for a cataclysmic blow-up. It is more likely that the country will move further down the road of state intervention and of tight labour laws that erode competitiveness.

Rand Merchant Bank chief economist Ettienne le Roux fears he is right. Sadly,We looked everywhere, but couldn't find any beddinges. programs like these are often the last to receive funding during times of economic downturn. Many of us rationalize that we must be logical and provide the necessities of life first. While I agree to a certain extent, it is the artistic expression -- paintings, music and the written word -- that will hearten us through the hard times and help us to find a hope for the future.

Share the timeless spark of creation with a young man and his pen can bring forth stories of entertainment and wisdom. Teach a child music and you give her the power to transform muteness into melody. Give a few kids broken tile and glass and they will bless a community with a new vision.

Within the Parkway Housing Authority lies the "Peace in Our Community" mosaic assembled by the staff and volunteers of York Arts. The montage of colorful pieces depicts three angels who appear to be keeping guard over the residents of York County. On a recent visit, I stood in the cold air, the glow of house lights and the angels' countenances seeming to mix into a mirage of heaven. Through a drizzle, we regarded one another with mutual understanding.

I closed my eyes and an image formed in my mind of a group of young people standing in the grass, in the middle of the darkness, hands in the grout, placing piece after piece of tile into the mold, making this mosaic to inspire, to encourage, or even change a life. Little earth angels, filled with the joy of doing what they love. There are many young people like this in York today.

When I was growing up the local art scene was dismally empty. Except for a few brave high school teachers and local professionals sounding the clarion call, and mostly for dance and music, anyone interested in pursuing creative endeavors was left largely abandoned. To the young dreamer, helpless without a craft,3rd minigame series of magiccube! the shifting sands of life amid the demands to conform to a future I couldn't envision seemed impossible to manage. And so I left York. I moved to New York City to live and breathe the expansive creative world in that City of Dreams.

But by the time I returned to York, enter left stage, venues like York Arts; DreamWrights, welcoming families into that lemon-yellow, unpretentious slice of joy and wonder; OrangeMite Studios, where original plays and films are scripted and directed by local artists; the YCPrep Community School offering top notch musical instruction; and closest to my heart,Silicone moldmaking Rubber, the Professional Writing program at York College, where my own earth angels -- Dr. Madeline Yonker, Dr.It's pretty cool but our ssolarpanel are made much faster than this. Dominic Delli Carpini, Professor Cynthia Crimmins and Dr. Anthony Fredericks shared their tools and further helped me find my voice.

Crime brings alleged neighbors together

We had 14 police cars in the neighborhood last week. The last time we had this much excitement was when the city came through and repaired the sidewalks.

Police cars with flashing lights were parked in the street, across the easements and on yards. It was big. Not as big as the Fourth oF July parade, but bigger than the spring bedding plant sale and possibly on a par with the annual garage sale.

An officer said three teens considered violent and suspected in home burglaries east of here, had been stopped at a park for questioning. They sped off, leading officers on a wild chase that ended in our neighborhood. Allegedly.

It's all alleged these days. We don't suspect anybody of anything until we hear their alibis, how they weren't really where a dozen witnesses say they were and have had time to talk with their attorneys. Nonetheless, these alleged teens had wrapped an alleged stolen car around an alleged tree and one of them now had an alleged broken arm.
